On the Black Sea, 17 km south-east of Gelendzhik, near the beach resort village Praskoveevka in Krasnodar Krai, Russian is a wonderful natural monument - a rock " Parus." It is a thin layer of sandstone, which stands high up from the sea and from a distance resembles a ship's sail.
Rock "Sail" consists of yellowish gray fine-grained dense sandstone (as well as the limestone cliffs "Twelve Apostles" in Australia), and its height is 30 meters, width - 25 m. The thickness of the wall is a little more than 1 meter, and as it might seem at first glance, it could build only a man, but it is not, it was created by nature itself, and it is very surprising how well it turned out.
Studies have shown that the rock " Parus " is part of the solid sandstone, which was previously on the site, and after years of only one layer left by him, while the rest were destroyed, this theory proves that coastal cliff located near this reservoir has the same structure. Also on the other side of the rocks on the seabed is a continuation of the formation, but not destroyed, and it appears on the surface of water. flickr/Laurent Dubreuil
Sail Rock has more than three quarters of the issued perpendicular to the sea shore. Another interesting mystery of this rock is a hole, which is located at a height of about 2.5 meters, its origin is still not clear. In historical sources it is written that it is pierced by the arrows of mountain artillery during the Caucasian War. But in 1903 S. Vasiukov, who investigated the Black Sea coast, concluded and wrote that - "the rock fired from the battleship sailors allowed 4 charge, but the wall remained unshakable, even though traces of nuclei, never broken through the rock."
But time and the elements on the unshakeable natural monument, the rock "Parus" is constantly exposed to strong winds, storms and waves. It is not known how long it will be able to stand and delight people with his haughty air. Moreover, they themselves tourists and sightseers accelerate the destruction of rocks, stones breaking off themselves for souvenirs and carving inscriptions. November 24, 1971 Rock "Sail" is declared a natural monument and is assigned to the Divnomorskoe village councils for the protection and care.
