On the Band of River Brunei is a settlement consisting of four dozen villages that are located literally on the water. It's called Kampong Ayer and its history has lasted for more than 1300 years. It is home to about 30 thousand people, representing over 10% of the total population of the whole country. Schools, police stations, fire stations, hospitals, markets and houses are on stilts. All the mod cons are here plumbing and electricity, air conditioners, telephones, satellite TV, and Internet. Still, we had to constantly watch our step so as not to be tripped up by broken boardwalk slats.
All facilities connects more than 36 kilometers of bridges. It is noteworthy that on stilts built and modern buildings of concrete. Initially Kampong Ayer placed slightly downstream of Brunei, close to its mouth. Over time, the settlement gradually moved up the river. Kampong Ayer is recognized as a national treasure and the state has made great efforts to preserve this way of life.
